Our History

Christ the King (Kibera) was established in 1999.

Christ The King Catholic Church in Kibera stands as one of the most important centers of Catholic faith and community life within the informal settlement of Kibera in Nairobi. Its history reflects not only the growth of the Catholic Church in the area but also the resilience, faith, and unity of the people it serves.

The church began in 1974 as a small outstation of **St. Michael’s Catholic Church**, which was responsible for pastoral work in the wider Lang’ata area. At the time, Kibera was rapidly growing, and many Catholic faithful lived far from established parishes. Missionary priests, particularly the Guadalupe Fathers, began visiting the area to celebrate Mass and organize small Christian communities. Worship initially took place in simple structures, and pastoral work was carried out under challenging conditions. Despite limited resources, the faith of the people remained strong.

As Kibera’s population continued to increase in the 1980s and 1990s, the need for a fully established parish became evident. Priests working in the area deepened their involvement by living among the people and strengthening local church leadership. Small Christian Communities were formed, bringing neighbors together for prayer, catechism, and mutual support. These communities became the backbone of parish life and helped nurture a sense of belonging and responsibility among the faithful.

Recognizing the steady growth of the Catholic population in Kibera, the Archdiocese of Nairobi formally established Christ The King as an independent parish in 1998. This marked a significant milestone. As a parish, Christ The King gained greater autonomy in organizing pastoral programs, administering sacraments, and developing church structures. The establishment of the parish reflected both the spiritual maturity of the community and the Church’s commitment to serving the people of Kibera more closely.

Over the years, Christ The King Catholic Church has expanded its ministries beyond spiritual nourishment. The parish has actively engaged in social outreach programs, youth empowerment, education initiatives, and charitable services aimed at supporting vulnerable families. In a community often faced with economic hardship, the church has provided hope, stability, and moral guidance. It has become not only a place of worship but also a center for community development and solidarity.

Today, Christ The King Catholic Church remains a vibrant and influential parish within the Archdiocese of Nairobi. Through its liturgical celebrations, active lay participation, and commitment to social mission, it continues to shape the spiritual and social life of Kibera. Its history is a testament to the power of faith in transforming communities and to the enduring presence of the Church in places where hope is most needed.
